NCLEX MEDICATIONS WITH NURSING PRECAUTIONS (Part 1):

Use of STEROIDS especially in high doses over time, increases the risk of Osteoporosis.
CALCIUM DISODIUM EDETATE Side Effect: Nephrotoxicity
CARBAMAZEPINE (TEGRETOL) Side Effect: Agranulocytosis
Do not administer together LISINOPRIL and ALDACTONE, result in Hyperkalemia.
TRAZODONE (DESYREL) is an Antidepressant, relieves Insomnia.
ALDOMET Adverse Effect: Mood Changes
MEPERIDINE or DEMEROL is not recommended in patients with Sickle Cell Disease because it induced Seizure.
Maintain adequate salt intake when on LITHIUM because it can affect LITHIUM Levels.
BETA AGONIST is used first in MDI to relax smooth muscle of airway.
ANTIHISTAMINE can aggravate urinary incontinence and should be avoided by clients with this problem.
ALBUTEROL (PROVENTIL) Adverse Effect: Increase in Heart Rate
CAPTOPRIL can cause an accumulation of potassium or Hyperkalemia.  Avoid salt substitutes.
PROCAINAMIDE (PRONESTYL) is used to suppress cardiac arrhythmias, when given IV, monitor continuous EKG readings.
Usual pedia dose of MORPHINE  is 0.1 mg/kg every 3 to 4 hours.
Nausea is a common Side Effect of ERYTHROMYCIN.
QUETIAPINE (SEROQUEL) should report elevated Temperature and sweating when taking this drug.  NMS which is life threatening is a rare disorder that can occur as Side Effect of Antipsychotic Medications characterized by muscle rigidity, tachycardia, hyperthermia, sweating, altered consciousness, autonomic dysfunction, increased CPK.
NITROGLYCERIN effect is vasodilation , the client must be monitored for Hypotension.
Oral Hypoglycemic Medications should be taken at specified times.  A regular interval between doses should be maintained since it stimulates the Islets of Langerhans to produce insulin.
COUMADIN is known to cross the placenta, is considered Teratogenic.
AMINOPHYLLINE Side Effect: Restlessness and Palpitations
DIGOXIN increases ventricular irritability and increases the risk of Ventricular Fibrillation during and after Cardioversion
